The minute repeater is the most poetic of complications. At the push of a slide, it chimes the time—the hours, quarters, and minutes—on tiny gongs within the case. It is not a sound one uses to tell the time in the dark, but to experience time. It is a private, mechanical carillon, a melody of precious metals that turns time into music.
The chronograph, or stopwatch, is a testament to our desire to measure intervals of time, from a lap at the racetrack to the duration of a business presentation. Modern marvels like the Richard Mille RM 50-03, with a movement lighter than a feather, can withstand the G-forces of an F1 car, while the split-second "rattrapante" chronograph can time multiple events simultaneously.
